AirSeed and VicForest trialed drone-based pod planting near Noojee, Victoria, aiming to safely and efficiently reforest challenging post-logging terrain with stringybark messmate.
AirSeed by grovia partnered with VicForest to trial drone-based pod planting technology, aiming to revolutionize reforestation practices in forestry. The trial was conducted 7 km from the VicForest office in Noojee, Victoria, at a recently cleared forestry coup. Logging coups often present dangerous terrain, with hardwood debris either spot-piled into windrows or left to decay, making traditional planting methods both hazardous and time-consuming.
The goal of this trial was to evaluate whether AirSeed by grovia's aerial planting technology could provide a safer, faster, and more cost-effective method for reforesting logging coups, eliminating the need for personnel to navigate challenging terrain. By deploying seed pods via drones, the project successfully fostered a new generation of stringybark messmate trees (Eucalyptus obliqua), which emerged in significantly greater numbers compared to other eucalyptus species naturally regenerating in the area.
This collaboration highlights the potential of innovative drone technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and ecological outcomes in land management and reforestation efforts.
