Reviving Ecosystems: Rewilding Winton Wetlands for Growling Grass Frogs

Rewilding Winton Wetlands for Growling Grass Frogs.

Restoring Habitat for a Vulnerable Species

Once common across wetland ecosystems, Growling Grass Frogs are now classified as vulnerable in Victoria, Australia, and have not been recorded at Winton Wetlands for many years, rendering them locally extinct. These frogs are vital to wetland ecosystems, serving as both predators of frogs and insects and as prey for wetland birds, forming a critical link in the food chain.

Planting for Biodiversity and Rewilding

AirSeed is working to restore the Winton Wetlands ecosystem by planting a diverse mix of grasses and rushes to create habitats and breeding grounds for the "Growlers." This rewilding effort aims to re-establish the species locally and regionally, enhance biodiversity on-site, and restore essential ecological functions and processes.

Wetlands: Critical Ecosystems for Nature and Communities

Wetlands, like those at Winton, play a vital role in regulating the water table, reducing flooding and erosion, and improving water quality. By restoring these habitats, the project not only supports plants and animals but also delivers direct benefits to human communities through improved ecosystem services.
