On this property in the Hunter Region of NSW, there is a transition happening. The landholder are moving from a sheep and cattle farm to a solely cattle farm, and in doing so are able to reduce stock movement and create a nature reserve along the sensitive creek area and begin to bring back the plants and animals to the creekline.
Waterways provide a great many ecological services, so starting with the restoration of this feature will enable benefits to flow through to a greater number of plants and animals. While restoring ecosystems takes time, the landholder leapt at the opportunity to use drone aerial seeding to achieve robust restoration is less time than manual planting. The revegetation on this property centres around the box-gum grassy woodland that used to occur widely in the region, and is considered a Threatened Ecological Community, as well as the focal creekline passing through the revegetation site. We will be planting a biodiverse mix of native canopy, mid-storey and ground-layer species in each of these communities. The expected benefits and restoration outcomes will include increased vegetation cover, improved species diversity, and increased wildlife populations.
